Imagine a quiet morning of drawing, surrounded by horses, trees, and the peaceful energy of the farm. This June, Horse Discovery is offering an intimate session led by Susan Murphy — a self‑taught artist, longtime art teacher, and fellow horse‑lover, alongside Cheri Davidson and the Horse Discovery herd.

This offering is designed for people new to drawing, or artists who want to reconnect with creativity in a gentle, unhurried way. You don’t need any experience, just a willingness to slow down, observe, and let the horses guide your eye and your hand.

  • Meet the Herd activity, followed by the horses joining us as they choose

  • A reflective teaching by Susan about presence, intuition, and creativity

Meet Susan

Meet Susan, leading you in Plein Air Drawing With Horses.

Born in Peterborough and raised on the islands and shores of Lake Kasshabog, Susan has spent more than 50 years deeply shaped by the quiet rhythms of the land and the animals around her. A self‑taught artist, gardener, and longtime art instructor, she now brings her gentle teaching style and deep intuition to Horse Discovery.

She didn’t come to the farm just to teach — she came to heal, and found herself staying. With the encouragement of the horses, a quiet, empathic way of seeing began to emerge. Now she’s ready to share that quiet artist’s eye with others, using drawing as a doorway to presence, rather than perfection.

Her upcoming sessions are a beautiful opportunity to:

  • slow down with the horses

  • play with simple drawing

  • and rediscover the artist in all of us

Perfect for anyone who enjoys:

  • nature, reflection, and creativity

  • being with horses

  • gentle, beginner‑friendly experiences

Image has the capacity to inspire, heal, and make the heart soar.

Agenda for the Session

  • Welcome

We’ll open with a warm welcome, Land Acknowledgement, introductions, and a brief overview of safety and respect for the horses and each other.

  • Meeting the herd Experience a quiet, “over‑the‑fence,” non‑verbal, no‑touch connection with the horses. This is a time to ground, breathe, and notice which horse, vista, or feeling draws your attention. We will notice which horses are showing how they wish to be present with us. We will open the gate and invite them into our space or walk into the pastures to setup alongside them.

  • Story, reflection, and intention Susan will share a short, conversational talk about presence, intuition, and creativity, weaving in her own journey and how horses have played a role in her healing journey. You’ll then choose where to sit and settle in for your drawing time.

  • Exploratory drawing Using simple materials, you’ll begin an exploratory drawing. You may move as you wish or change your spot for a new perspective. This is not about technical perfection; it’s about noticing, feeling, and letting the moment shape your marks.Take a photo to preserve your inspiration in case you want to finish your drawing at home.

  • Closing circle To wrap up, we’ll gather again for anyone who wishes to share their experience, reflections, or discoveries about their work and the horses. We always find this time rich, and appreciate the quiet gifts that arise from this time together.

Who This Is For

  • Anyone curious about drawing, even if you’ve never tried before

  • People who enjoy nature, mindfulness, or being with horses

  • Wellness seekers looking for a gentle, non‑intense creative reset

  • Those who want to meet the herd in a relaxed, reflective way
